Pre-assessing the prior knowledge of students before a cycle of instruction is the best way to plan individualized and successful growth-based units for each class of students instructors teach on a given year. CLD learners are no exception to this rule. Biography-driven instruction assesses students’ prior experiences and knowledge to use this content as a resource for all learners in the classroom (Herrera & Murry, 2016, p. 11). Multiple models of instruction, including BDI, provide pre-assessment strategies for CLD and grade-level learners. This toolkit provides three practical strategies for pre-assessing students’ content knowledge before planning instruction, a Multiple Intelligences inventory, an article on goal-setting, and a how-to on unpacking standards for new instructors.
